Kinky Curly Yaki’s AKC Textured Extensions!

I’m not sure why but there seems to be a common misconception that if you’re natural then you shouldn’t be wearing a weave! Who says? Where is that written in the Natural Hair Girls Guide to Life? OK, so that guide doesn’t exist, but you get what I’m saying.

KinkyCurlyYaki 094

Now, if you are like me and you are a natural then you know that’s just ludicrous.  For me, wearing wigs and weaves actually made going natural a hell of a lot easier than it would have been otherwise because I certainly would have ended up relaxing or completely ruining my transitioning hair.

The one thing though that I was finding to be an issue as I came to the end of my transition and into my full natural hair state in 2014 is that I needed textures that would:

  • Mimic my own natural hair texture
  • Allow me versatility when styling so that I can channel any of my Alter Ego’s while wearing it
  • Be of good quality, as good weave is an investment and should have the potential to be used several times
  • As a beauty investment be budget friendly and not drain the pockets

If you look for these same characteristics when shopping for naturally textured extensions, then I’m confident that  you’re gonna find what you want and more in one  of Kinky Curly Yaki’s natural looking extensions! Read on for my full review of the texture that most suits me and my hair, the Afro Kinky Curly texture. Come, let me tell you all the ways I love it!

My hair arrived cleansed and smelling amazing, ready for immediate wear!

Initial Review

My process of receipt was the same as any customer.  I received confirmation of what product I would be receiving (as if I had ordered), status update as the order was processed and shipped. Kinky Curly Yaki  is a Canadian company so expect your hair to arrive via Canada Post by way of USPS in the states.  From there to my great state of North Carolina it only took about 3 days and tracking information was provided via email so I was able to keep up with my package every step of the way.

When my hair arrived as you see pictured.  It was packaged wrapped neatly in purple tissue paper and smelling like what I imagine Unicorns breath smells like.  Yummy!!!!! I’ve still got to email Viv, the owner of KCY, to find out if she will share what poo/conditioner combo she uses on this hair.

I immediately took out the extensions, finger combed them, and wet a test portion to see the true curl pattern.  Lovely, of course.  I combed a good bit and noticed no tangling or shedding and sat it aside until it was time to make into a u-part wig.

I received 4 bundles in 24/22/18/16 inches and their standard 14 inch closure all in the Afro Kinky Curly texture.  I will say that the closure was actually the kinkiest of the bunch which was fine with me as it lent to the realism of the hair.

Creating my U-part Closure Wig

Speaking of realism, when wearing a closure the best technique in my opinion is to bleach the knots on the closure.  This technique involves applying bleach to the bottom of the closure gently so that the mixture does not seem through and damage the strands of hair on top.  The bleach turns the little black knots on the bottom a nice brown to dark blonde so that they sort of “disappear” into the lace creating the illusion of a scalp when the closure is worn.

Once I bleached the knots and washed and air-dried the wefts I proceeded to making the wig.  First, sew the closure in place on the spandex dome cap followed by all the wefts.  Yes ALL 4 bundles save a good 5 inch long piece of the 16inch! My LOVE for big fluffy hair is very real.  I like to sew my units down so I did not add any wig clips or combs to the unit, although you can do so if you’d like of course. Bleaching the knots in my opinion is key to making your unit look realistic, just look at how it melts seamlessly into my part! That’s what happens with a quality closure like this one from Kinky Curly Yaki!

Styling, versatility, wear & care

I gotta say that from years of transitioning in a texture that DID NOT mimic my own natural hair texture, I can only be grateful for companies like  Kinky Curly Yaki who have gotten it more than right! The highlights of wearing quality extensions that behave and look like my own hair are:

  • Not having to purchase new products to care for the hair
  • Styling is simplified because I don’t have to figure out HOW I’m going to style the hair………I just do what I know, and it works! No guess work or anxiety wondering if my style will “turnout”
  • Continuing on the styling front, a huge plus is that I can get MULTIPLE styles from my one texture of hair (see attached photo of 4 styles that I got from this unit install……there were MORE!)
  • The hair is lightweight and great for wash and go styles.  This is your get up and go hair! So practical and necessary for us busy Diva’s out here just trying to take over the world and not worry about our hair in the process! **flips Afro Kinky Curls in the air**

Styling this hair was a breeze! First, I thinned and layered the hair to get the most natural look possible.  I used a handheld dryer with a

KinkyCurlyYaki 118

comb attachment to blow the dampened hair out.  I then used a pair of serrated thinngi ng sheers to thing the hair out in small one inch sections.  I cut light layers into the hair and then re-wet the hair and added a bit of Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls and let the hair air dry to perfection.Like with my own natural hair I get bored easily and I’m on to the next style, thankfully this hair is made for those of us who value versatility. Over the next week I styled the hair in a braid out, heat styled the hair with a 1 3/4 curling wand.  To limit the amount of heat to the hair I stretched it dry in about 6 braids the night before so that I wouldnt have to blow it out before wanding……..and I know you are wondering, YES your curls will come back after heat styling or blow drying! Of all the styles that I acheived you gotta know that the hair in its natural state was my fav!  I live for full Diana Ross/Chaka Khan/80’s dancing queen big ole fluffy hair ***YASSS*** and this hair effortlessly fits the bill.

As I mentioned briefly in my bullet points, the need for new products to
KinkyCurlyYaki 262care this hair is totally unnecessary.  Again, you have extensions that not only look but behave in the same way as your natural hair.  Feel free to use your favorite shampoos, conditioners, and styling products on this hair.My suggestions for extensions no matter the texture gear to ward moisture as this hair is no longer attached to a scalp and drying could be an issue without adequate moisture.

As I Am Coconut Cowash and Dr. Miracles Conditioning Shampoo (with Olive and Jojoba oil) are both excellent cleansing choices to impart moisture into these tresses to keep them bouncy and shiny.Deep conditioning the hair with a product like Cantu Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque will help reinforce and lock in the moisture and shine of those cleansers.

Final Thoughts

logoLet me tell those of you who don’t know me, I’m an old weave head! Okaayyy, not new to this at all!  I used to frequent all of YOUR favorite sites like BHM, LHCF, and the like to find the best ways to care for and grow my hair while going natural.  WEAVE got me through 5 years of transitioning and I wish that there was a company like Kinky Curly Yaki around when I began to transition in sew-ins in 2009-2010 that catered to kinky gals.  Instead I tortured my leave out with heat and chemicals, I texturized my entire head for the first year to keep it “manageable” , and all sorts of other careless shenanigans.

Thanks companies like   Kinky Curly Yaki you don’t have to worry about blending your 3 or 4 type hair with some 2a wavy texture, you can protect your entire head of hair while transitioning with their quality closures, and you can trust that they can help you figure out what you need if you cant on your own.  Vivian, the owner and Queen of Kank herself, is a veteran in the hair game and started the company 2011 because she was tired of damaging her natural hair to blend with unlike textures.  She has tested and re-tested the product that she supplies.  With all of the new hair companies jumping on the “natural train” everyday you can take comfort in knowing that   Kinky Curly Yaki  was born from a passion to provide something that was so needed in the natural hair world — extensions made just for versatile African American textured hair.

This hair fits the bill because it hits all my requirements that I told you in the beginning of this review:

  • Mimics my own natural hair texture
  • Allows me versatility when styling so that I can channel any of my Alter Ego’s while wearing it
  • Be of good quality, as good weave is an investment and should have the potential to be used several times
  • As a beauty investment be budget friendly and not drain the pockets

As for cons let me make some points here:

  • If you are in the market for “tangle free” extensions (show me those and I’ll show you a magic unicorn that farts stars and glitter -_- because quite frankly that doesn’t exist. If you have hair it will tangle) then this hair may not be for you.  As the hair that grows from your head gets natural tangles you should expect this from your extensions.  The kinkier the hair the more prone to lite tangling it is. With that said, this hair WILL NOT ride up the back of your neck like a tiny chimpanzee, nor matte into a rat’s nest.
  • If you prefer hair that you do not have to care for and you can just get up and go everyday or not comb it for days this hair may not be for you.  If you are like me and take pride in your hair this shouldn’t be an issue. Again, I love styling and seeing the versatility in my hair, and these extensions afford me that same opportunity each day.
  • These extensions are meant to be used again, and again, and when you think you want to try some other hair and it mistreats you……this hair will be there for you AGAIN! So, if you want throw away hair and not hair that is worth your hard-earned money then by all means, hit up the local BSS and get your mediocre extension life!

In addition to those points, the company is ever evolving to meet their customers (YOURS & MY) needs! They will be releasing 2 new textures this year with one ( the AFRO COILY) texture available for pre-order NOW! They also offer impeccable customer service, are active in the natural hair community by attending and sponsoring events, and they love helping you save by always hitting you off with great promotions and sales ANNNNDDDD giving coupon codes to the people they love most like YOU— my followers!

So, when you go to Kinky Curly Yaki to place your order don’t forget to enter MOEDADIVA at checkout to save some coin!

Be sure to leave a comment and let me know if you have tried this company’s beautifully realistic extensions, let me know if you want to know more about how I have rocked this hair (if you follow me on IG you know I made it POP in many ways not mentioned here), and  be sure to share this review with your friends and followers!
